Introduction

Imagine if you had to learn everything from simply observing others and interacting with them directly. You would be confined to the few hundred people you interact with significantly during the course of your lifetime. Starting around 6000 years ago and at various places in the world indpendently, humans began writing their language. This allowed us to learn from people and places distant in time and space in a way that oral tradition alone does not allow. But even learning from writing would be dependent on which writings you happened to encounter during your life without an institution to collect and organize writings. The library developed as a systematic way to organize writings and help you discover them based on your interests rather than the happenstance of your life events. In this module, you will learn how our library at Parkside can enable your research, generally and specifically in this course, and meet our subject-specific librarian.
